It’s cold, correct?
Did you grind your teeth, clench your stomach in a knot, and beat yourself up because the water was cold and not hot? As in, “Dammit, I turned on the hot water tap and all I got was cold water; once again, I didn’t get what I wanted!”
Did You Yell, “Why Ain’t the Water Hot?!”?
Of course not. That would be ridiculous.
You know that it takes a little time for the water to become hot after you crank the hot water tap. It takes time for your command to influence the temperature of the water. And you don’t beat yourself up because you know, with certainty, hot water is on its way.
In fact, can you see that, from another perspective, you were actually feeling hot water. It was hot water that wasn’t hot…YET.
So here are my questions: Why do you hold such expectations of instant gratification in other areas of your life? And why do you beat yourself up when the” water isn’t hot yet” in those other areas? (Click that link to Tweet it)
Your Life Is a Lot Like Your Bathroom Sink
You desire something. You begin to change your beliefs as you’ve learned to do (“turning the hot water tap”). And you get so disappointed by the cold water that flows.
So here is a new, better-feeling story you can tell yourself: When you are changing your beliefs to align them with a desired result or outcome, you do immediately experience the fruition of your desires. Just like with the initial cold water, you are experiencing your desires. Your new, growing beliefs just haven’t aligned themselves enough with them…YET.
And telling yourself that new story doesn’t just feel better. It’s also believable. And it’ll even help the water get hot a little faster.
