Well…what if you really could travel back in time, let’s say, twenty years and meet yourself as a younger person? What sage advice would you have for yourself?
I’ll bet you’d tell yourself things like:
- Don’t worry about whether the Bears make the playoffs, spend more time with your kids
- Tell your spouse you love her and talk with her instead of watching “The Walking Dead” tonight.
- The office will actually do just fine if you don’t stay until 6:30 tonight; go home and eat dinner with your family
But Would the Younger “You” Actually Listen to You?
But, as fun as that might be, you know what would be even more awesome? Getting paid a visit from your future self! And hearing what advice your older, wiser self has for you.
The debate over whether or not time is real is ongoing. But the general consensus is that everything is happening right now, all at once. What feels like the past, present, and future is merely a slowed down slice of the big, all-encompassing pie of time. (Click that link to Tweet it)
So what does that mean? It means that all the past “you’s” all exist. Right now. You’re simply experiencing the “you” of this moment – but that doesn’t mean those previous ones are “gone”.
And it also means that all the future “you’s” exist too. They’re real and, if you’re willing, you can facilitate a visit from one of them.
Here’s How You Can Speak With the Future (Wiser) “You”
Sound crazy? Quantum physics often does. So just give this a try:
- Sit quietly and close your eyes
- Clear your mind
- Invite a future “you” to visit you in this moment
- Open you mind and heart to any messages from “you”
Does this work? Yes, it does.
My future self has shared things with me that have been very valuable. He told me, for example, to stop trying to write to please the cynics and naysayers because, he told me, “…you’ll never have the power to change their cynicism because it actually has nothing to do with you – it’s all about them and their choices…”. He also told me to “…hold nothing back…don’t be scared to share everything when you write…you’ll never run out of inspiration and your unadulterated truths will resonate more thoroughly…”
My future “me” has also told me not to “…sweat the small stuff like possessions and toys…” and to “…never pass up the miracle of this moment…”. Good stuff for sure.
Try the experiment. See what “you” has to tell you. It’s a lot of fun and, if you’re like me, you’ll be really glad to gain access to such a wise mentor. (Click that link to Tweet it) And, don’t worry, you can always DVR “The Walking Dead” anyway.
